The Ebony Legacy Exhibition
Take a visual expedition of life discovery and individual remembrance through our Ebony Legacy Collection. This photographic and item filled showcase features many of the area's most able sons and daughters and their contributions to a global community. With personal memorabilia we are reminded of their passage through the Garden City and the footsteps that changed our world. The "Collection" also features images of landmark building and geographic locations that help define Augusta's history.
Pilgrim
Life Insurance
Company Exhibition The Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History displays artifacts and
documents from the former Pilgrim Life Insurance Company. The company, located
at 1143 Laney Walker Boulevard, was the oldest Insurance Company in the state
of Georgia. The Building is now owned and occupied by The Walker Group. Come step
into Augusta's past at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum!
The
Alice Davis Collection
This collection consists of twelve original paintings by Alice Davis and African
artifacts from Miss Davis' private collection. Because
of her vast travels, she was able to bring new and exciting artistic and historical
concepts to both adults and children.
The Charles Smith Collection
Dr. Charles Smith is an artist, activist, minister, and historian. Smith was born in 1940 in New Orleans, Louisiana, however he was raised in Chicago, Illinois. Smith credits his mother with being a driving force in the creation of his monumental sculpture garden, acknowledging her love and devotion to God and the church.
As a young adult, Smith served as a U.S. Marine in Vietnam. After returning from Vietnam, he felt divinely inspired to create art that bolstered the self-esteem of African-Americans and other minorities. Dr. Smith’s work focuses in on and pays tribute to African-American heroes and heroines, spiritual leaders, artists, musicians, athletes, and personal friends. Dr. Smith says, “Each piece, to me, is like a seed planted and every place it goes it will tell the story of what I tried to share.”
The Lucy Craft Laney Museum expresses deep appreciation to the Kohler Foundation for donating a portion of Dr. Smith’s work to our museum.
