Students from Laney and Tubman visit Redcliffe Plantation
Corey Rogers, Museum Historian, 12.13.11

I find myself on occasion telling people how much I love my career. Working at the Laney Museum has been loads of excitement for over seven years. I can honestly say that no two days are the same.

Probably one of the best days I’ve had in these seven years occurred on December 13th, 2011. I had the opportunity to take 22 students and educators to South Carolina’s historic Redcliffe Plantation.

I chose Redcliffe primarily because of its unique position in this area. It’s one of the only plantations in this area, built during the antebellum period that still has the slave cabins from before the war.

The students from both schools enjoyed the tour, conducted by park ranger Elizabeth Laney. They asked very thoughtful questions and were always ready with an educated response when asked a question by the park ranger.

Here is a small sample of what the students thought of the field trip:"

Bridgette Walker, Lucy Craft Laney Comprehensive High School
"This field trip was very interesting and inspiring. The trip made me appreciate what I have more. Seeing how the slaves were treated really makes me mad because they treated black people like they were dogs. I loved how they preserved everything in the house. I would love to go back."

Kyle Dunn
"The trip was fun. I found out a lot about the plantation and slaves. I never knew they had a Christmas. The slaves lived in little houses while the master lived in a big four story mansion that the slaves built. I enjoyed the trip to the plantation. It was very interesting."

Robert Fields
"I enjoyed the trip to Redcliffe Plantation very much. I learned that many slaves were punished for trying to run away and for stealing. They were given only an hour of free time until they had to be in. This helped me realize the life of a slave in detail."

Dana Hudson
"My field trip to Redcliffe Plantation was interesting to me. I learned that slaves did celebrate Christmas. The thing that upset me was 20 people living in one house. Overall, it was a good learning experience."

Other student responses will be posted to the museum website in the coming weeks.

A special thanks to Pamela Woods and Allison Campbell for their willingness to participate in this worthwhile endeavor. Additional thanks to Elizabeth Laney and the wonderful staff at Redcliffe Plantation.
